Beijing Winter Olympics | Looking at the "green technology" of the Winter Olympics, how can the zero-carbon hut be "self-sufficient"?
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, January 26th (Reporter Zhao Xu) On the west side of the Ice Ribbon of the National Speed Skating Hall, two groups of stripe-shaped wind blades, which blend red, blue and green, stand at the top of a gray-white hut with a height of 2.5m. In winter, Feng Ling "dances", echoing the glittering and elegant facade of the Ice Ribbon.
"This is the’ Zero Carbon Cabin’ developed by our project team, and it will be used as the’ Ice Ribbon’ service and emergency consultation site during the Winter Olympics." Wei Yiming, vice president of Beijing Institute of Technology and director of the Energy and Environmental Policy Research Center of Beijing Institute of Technology, said.
The zero-carbon cabin is "fully equipped with all kinds of food", which uses the roof fan and solar photovoltaic panels to supply clean energy to meet the electricity demand of indoor air conditioners, office equipment, large screens on external walls, and is equipped with a heat recovery system and an electric energy storage system to realize energy self-sufficiency and intelligent regulation and control, and achieve zero carbon emission. "The building itself also uses environmentally friendly and recyclable steel materials, and the hut can be disassembled, moved and recycled." Yu Biying, a member of the project team and deputy director of the Energy and Environmental Policy Research Center of Beijing Institute of Technology, introduced.

Since September, 2021, Beijing Institute of Technology, together with the National Speed Skating Museum and Tsinghua University, has undertaken one of the key projects of the national key R&D plan —— "Key technologies and demonstration application of low-carbon monitoring and carbon neutral regulation in winter Olympics" to empower the green Olympic Games.
Where did it come from? How many? What should we do? Focusing on the "soul three questions" about carbon emissions in the Winter Olympics venues, the team also developed a technical system of "measurement and control" of carbon emissions, and developed a platform for carbon measurement in Winter Olympics, playing the role of "monitoring officer" of carbon emissions in Winter Olympics, so that the contribution of carbon emission reduction in Beijing Winter Olympics can be well-documented, well-documented and evidenced. At present, the equipment developed by the project has been applied to "Ice Ribbon" and "Ice Cube" of National Swimming Center.
"We have installed intelligent monitoring equipment at dozens of points, such as the grandstand area, energy-consuming equipment and audience entrance, to collect real-time data of carbon dioxide concentration, people flow, electricity, temperature and humidity of the venue, which is called’ measurement’. The data is transmitted back to the Winter Olympics carbon measurement platform, and the carbon emissions in various areas of the venue are automatically calculated. This is’ calculation’. " Yu Biying said that the project team is also responsible for measuring the emission reduction of various low-carbon technologies in the Beijing Winter Olympics and the overall carbon emissions of the event. "This platform is to calculate the carbon emissions of the Beijing Winter Olympics, that is, to calculate a carbon dioxide account."
"According to the actually calculated carbon emissions, the research team will give carbon neutral control schemes in different scenarios, such as carbon emission donation of Olympic-related enterprises, forestry carbon sinks, and low-carbon transportation. In addition, the Winter Olympics carbon measurement platform can also detect abnormal energy consumption and remind staff to check. This is the original intention of’ controlling’ and’ seeking’. " Shen Meng, an associate researcher at the Energy and Environmental Policy Research Center of Beijing Institute of Technology, said.
In addition to providing scientific and technological support for the Winter Olympics, the project team will also form a low-carbon solution for the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Winter Paralympics, a global promotion plan for low-carbon achievements, and a white paper on the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei for the Winter Olympics, according to the needs of relevant state departments, to show the world the low-carbon actions, emission reduction contributions and traction effects of the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Winter Paralympics on regional coordinated development.
"Quantifying the promotion effect of the Winter Olympics on investment industry, energy economy, social life and other aspects is of great significance to the summary of the Olympic legacy." Wei Yiming said that he hoped that the Beijing Winter Olympics would make the world more truly and sensibly approach China’s plan of hosting the Olympics in a green way, and feel the China experience of a low-carbon Olympics.
